Transportation Challenges

Located just under an hour’s drive north of Inverness and conveniently situated 2 miles east of the A9, Dornoch boasts accessibility. Our express bus connecting Thurso to Inverness makes stops in Dornoch, providing a one-hour connection to the Highland capital. Additionally, an hourly daytime bus links Dornoch to nearby Tain and continues to Inverness, enhancing connectivity for local communities.

However, the reality reveals challenges – the express bus operates only three times a day, and the local service to Inverness can result in a nearly two-hour journey with no services after 7 pm. While some taxi services aim to support Dornoch, their availability can be limited.

Community Transportation Launch

Recognising the limitations in public transport, especially during evenings, we identified a need in our community. The catalyst for change stemmed from difficulties faced by residents in attending medical appointments and combating social isolation, exacerbated by the pandemic.

After securing start-up funding from The Highland Council, Development Trusts Association Scotland, and Anne Duchess of Westminster’s Fund, we leased an electric vehicle, a Volkswagen ID.3, in April 2023 and Following planning, recruitment, vetting, and training of our volunteer drivers, we launched Dornoch Community Transport in May.

What we do

In our initial four months, our electric vehicle covered 2326 miles, fulfilling 49 bookings. With 23 dedicated volunteer drivers and approaching our goal of 30, our service has become a lifeline for those facing transportation challenges. Hospital, dental, and GP appointments constitute 45% of bookings, with Raigmore Hospital being the most requested destination. Beyond healthcare, we’ve assisted with social club meetings, pet visits to the vet, care home visits, and shopping excursions.

The impact goes beyond the practical; it’s about restoring joy and connection. Simple pleasures, like an afternoon trip into Dornoch for a hair appointment, have become significant for those previously hindered by transport barriers.

Join Us

Though still in its infancy, our service has garnered positive feedback and growing demand. Posters, business cards, and social media have increased awareness, but the most powerful promotion comes from word-of-mouth recommendations.

As we anticipate further growth, we invite residents of IV25 facing transportation challenges to consider trying Dornoch Community Transport. We welcome inquiries from groups or businesses aware of members or customers who could benefit from our assistance. If you’re interested in contributing as an occasional driver, we appreciate any support to meet the rising demand. Together, we’re enhancing accessibility and fostering connections in our community.
